"Rediscover the fox!...go boating!"

The Fox River is an excellent natural resource for boating in Wisconsin. The river is one of the few rivers in the United States that flows northward, stretching approximately 150 river miles from its headwaters near Portage to Lake Michigan, at Green Bay. Won't you join us as we.....

The river is geographically divided up into two distinct sections, the Upper Fox and the Lower Fox. The Upper Fox extends 110 river miles, from Portage to Lake Winnebago, falling about 36 feet from an elevation of 782 to 746 feet. The channel of the Upper Fox varies from 70 to 300 feet. It is sandy and relatively shallow, widening and deepening as it reaches Lake Winnebago.

This portion also contains most of the natural impoundment of Lake Winnebago, as well as Lake Butte des Morts, Lake Winneconne, Montello Lake, Lake Poygan, Buffalo Lake, Lake Puckaway, Green Lake and others. Lake Winnebago, the largest lake in Wisconsin, has a surface area of 137,708 acres and contains 88 miles of shoreline. These lakes provide countless opportunities for boating, as well as other forms of water recreation.

The Lower Fox extends 39 river miles from the head of Lake Winnebago to Green Bay. This portion of the Fox River is perhaps most known for its steep and changing grade, falling 170 feet from an elevation of 746 to 577 feet. This equates to an average hydraulic grade of 4 feet per mile. Twelve dams and a 17 manual lock system are located along the channel. Little Lake Butte des Morts, located near the headwaters of Lake Winnebago, remains the only major tributary of the Upper Fox.
