Fox Locks Vessel Lockage Procedures
Updated: March 28, 2014
- To notify Locktender approach lock and sound 3 long blasts on horn
- Upon approacing lock at a safe and slow speed, locktender will direct timing and placement of all vessels into and out of the lock chamber. Generally larger vessels enter and exit first.
- Personal Floatation Devices (PFD) are recommended for all passengers. Children 13 years old and younger are required by Federal Law to wear a PFD while aboard recreational vessels underway.
- A bow and stern safety line provided by Locktender is required for all vessels. Both safety lines must be attended at all times and are never to be tied to any vessel.
- Turn engine off while in the lock.
- No smoking or cooking while in the lock.
- Passengers of recreational vessels must remain in their vessel at all times during the lockage procedures. For safety, pets should be on a leash.
- Operators should have vessel information and fee readily available to the Locktender. Seasonal and daily permits must be permanently displayed in a location easily seen by Locktender.
- All operators must be able to control their vessel in a safe and sober manner.
- Failure to adhere to the above quidelines may result in a refusal of lockage and/or notification of law enforcement authorities. Locktender will complete Incident Report record.

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS (LNM)
GREAT LAKES REGION
GREAT LAKES, Advance Notice Prior to Passing Railroad Drawbridges, Chart 14500
Mariners are encouraged to provide advance notice of arrival if transiting a railroad drawbridge is anticipated. Providing an advance notice to a railroad drawbridge may not be specifically required, but this practice will help to minimize the possibility that a vessel will be unreasonably delayed at a railroad drawbridge that passes large volumes of train and vessel traffic at the same location. Mariners are particularly encouraged to provide advance notice prior to passing the Norfolk Southern Railroad drawbridges at Mile 0.76 over Cuyahoga River in Cleveland Harbor, OH, Mile 0.72 over Indiana Harbor Ship Canal in Indiana Harbor, IN, and Mile 1.36 over Calumet River in Calumet Harbor, IL. In addition to making SECURITE calls while approaching or departing facilities in these harbors, mariners are encouraged to directly contact railroad drawbridge operators and provide an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) at the bridge(s). [26/05] [34/12]
GREAT LAKES, Drawbridge Delay Reports, Chart 14500
Mariners are requested to submit Reports of Drawbridge Signal/Operations Delays directly to the Ninth Coast Guard District Bridge Branch using the attached form. Reports of signal or drawbridge delays have been processed by Coast Guard Marine Safety Offices in recent years, but will now be processed and tracked by the Bridge Branch. Reports may be sent by mail, e-mail, or by fax. The mailing address and fax number are on the form. The updated form is printed and also attached on the last page of this list. [08/05] [34/12]
GREAT LAKES, Drawbridge Advance Notice During High Winds, Chart 14500
Mariners are encouraged to provide advance notice of arrival to drawbridges during periods of high winds. Depending on the orientation and type of bridge high winds may prevent some bridges from operating as required by regulation. [46/13]
